Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette de Banyuls-sur-Mer

The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette is a small chapel with white walls perched on a hilltop above the Mediterranean Sea. It features a red-tiled roof and a single bell tower, offering views across the town and coastline from above.

A local vineyard owner built this chapel in 1865 following a pilgrimage to a famous appearance site. The building emerged from a movement of believers who erected similar shrines in many locations.

This chapel serves as a local pilgrimage site dedicated to a reported appearance of the Virgin Mary in the 19th century. Visitors from the area and pilgrims come here to pause and feel connected to Catholic tradition.

You reach the chapel by heading uphill from Banyuls-sur-Mer through residential neighborhoods on a winding road. The climb is steep but short and rewards you with wide views once you arrive.

After dark, the chapel is lit up and creates a recognizable silhouette against the sky. This illuminated image makes it visible from many different spots throughout town and turns it into a nighttime landmark.
