The Barony of Geraki is a medieval lordship on the western slopes of Mount Parnon in Greece, with a castle that served as its administrative center. The site spreads across hilly terrain and contains the remains of fortifications that show how the region was controlled in those times.
The barony was founded in 1209 and became one of twelve secular baronies of the Principality of Achaia after Crusaders conquered the Peloponnese. Later it fell to Byzantine forces, marking a shift in power across the region.
The fortress shows a blend of Frankish military design and local Byzantine building methods, reflecting how two different cultures merged in medieval Greece. You can still see this mixed style in the structures today, revealing how these influences lived side by side.
The location sits on higher ground with views over the surrounding areas, making it fairly easy to spot but requiring some effort to explore fully. Visitors should be prepared for uneven ground and allow time to walk through the scattered ruins.
The Nivelet family lost Geraki to Byzantine forces but kept their baronial title by receiving new lands in Messenia, creating a scattered collection of properties. This unusual arrangement shows how nobility preserved power even after losing territory.
