Fort Island, Guyana, River island with colonial fort in Essequibo Islands-West Demerara, Guyana.
Fort Island is a river isle in the Essequibo River that holds two significant colonial structures. The site contains Fort Zeelandia, a stone military installation, and a Government Building that once served multiple administrative purposes.
The Dutch built Fort Zeelandia in 1743 as a replacement for an earlier wooden structure from 1726. A Government Building was added afterward to serve as the regional center for administration and justice.
The Court of Policy Building stands as a visual reminder of how the Dutch colonial government operated in this region. The structure reflects the way European institutions were transplanted and adapted to function in a tropical setting.
Visitors can reach the island by ferry service departing from the town of Parika, with a regular stop at the site. The buildings are accessible for viewing from the outside and can be explored on foot.
The interior layout of the fort reveals a practical two-part design where the lower level stored food and ammunition while the upper level housed military personnel. This arrangement shows how the garrison managed both resources and daily operations in this setting.
