Kordun, Geographic region in Central Croatia.
Kordun is a geographic region in Central Croatia that stretches from the Petrova Gora mountain range along the Korana and Slunjčica rivers. The landscape is built on limestone with many sinkholes and encompasses several municipalities including Slunj, Cetingrad, Krnjak, Rakovica, and Vojnić.
The territory was part of the Habsburg Military Frontier, established during the 16th century as a defensive buffer against Ottoman expansion. This role shaped the region's development and settlement patterns for centuries to follow.
The region displays traditional Frontier-era building styles that you can see in village layouts and stone houses, showing how communities organized themselves for defense. Walking through settlements, you notice narrow streets and compact designs that reflect centuries of living in a fortified border zone.
The area is best explored by visiting the main villages and touring the river landscapes that cut through the terrain. It helps to have your own transportation since the municipalities are spread out and public connections between them can be limited.
The name Kordun comes from the French term 'cordon militaire' and refers to the network of guardhouses and fortifications that once protected this border zone. You can still trace this historical connection through the region's geography and settlement names today.
