Veliki slap, Tallest waterfall in Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia
Veliki slap is a waterfall in Plitvice Lakes National Park where water plunges down a single vertical drop into the Korana River below. The cascade originates from the Plitvica Potok stream and creates a powerful sight with roaring water and thick mist.
The site became part of Plitvice Lakes National Park in 1949, which later received UNESCO World Heritage designation. This protection ensured the preservation of the waterfall and its surrounding landscape.
The name Veliki slap means Great Waterfall in Croatian and reflects local recognition of this place's raw power and importance in the landscape. Visitors stand close enough to feel the spray and sense the force of the falling water.
The waterfall is easily reached from park entrance 1, with adequate parking available and a viewing platform nearby. The best time to visit is on dry days when you have clear views and can safely navigate the surrounding paths.
During winter months the water flow occasionally freezes solid, transforming the falling cascade into a towering ice formation. This rare occurrence creates an entirely different visual experience and shows just how cold it gets in this region.
