Caves of Barać, Show cave in Rakovica, Croatia.
Caves of Barać is a show cave system near the village of Nova Kršlja in Croatia, made up of several connected underground chambers. The site is divided into two main sections: an upper cave open to the public and a deeper lower cave below it.
Organized exploration of the caves began in the late 19th century, when researchers found archaeological remains inside the chambers, including bones of prehistoric cave bears and signs of early human presence. Those findings showed that the caves had been used long before they were opened to visitors.
The caves take their name from a local family that once farmed the surrounding land, and this connection to rural life is still felt in the area today. Visitors arriving from the nearby village pass through the same countryside that generations of locals have known.
The caves can only be visited with a guide, so it is worth checking opening times before you arrive. Wear sturdy shoes, as the ground inside is uneven and can be wet in places.
The lower section of the site, known as Donja Baračeva špilja, is home to insect species that exist nowhere else in the world. That same section also shelters two separate bat colonies living side by side.
