Caves of Barać, Show cave in Rakovica, Croatia.
Caves of Barać is a show cave system near the village of Nova Kršlja with multiple chambers displaying stalactite and stalagmite formations throughout its passages. The accessible route for visitors covers approximately 200 meters of underground corridors.
Excavation of this cave system began in 1877, uncovering archaeological remains including a bronze bracelet from 1912 and fossils of prehistoric cave bears. These discoveries indicate human and animal occupation dating back thousands of years.
Research teams from the University of Zagreb conduct regular speleological studies within the cave system, contributing to scientific understanding of karst formations.
Daily guided tours lead visitors through the cave system, with each tour lasting around 60 minutes through passages with lighting. Wear sturdy footwear as the ground is uneven and can be slippery in places.
The deeper cave section Donja Baračeva špilja harbors endemic insect species found nowhere else and hosts two distinct bat populations. These specialized inhabitants have adapted to the stable conditions within the cave.
