Mandre

Mandre is a coastal settlement on Pag Island with compact stone buildings arranged along narrow lanes that wind toward the Adriatic shoreline. The houses are tightly grouped, creating a dense street pattern that leads directly to the water's edge.

The settlement emerged from the need to access rich fishing grounds in the Adriatic, drawing fishermen to establish permanent homes on the island. This maritime foundation shaped the layout and character of the place from its earliest days.

Residents maintain strong ties to the sea through shared gathering spaces where fishing catches are traded and local seafood is prepared for communal meals. These practices shape how people use the waterfront and give the settlement its daily rhythm.

The settlement is reachable by road from Zadar across a causeway, making car and foot access straightforward. Summer months bring more frequent transport options to and from the island, though the small village remains accessible year-round.

The village features handmade stone piers constructed by fishing families across generations, still used today for anchoring boats. These family-built structures stand as quiet monuments to the work that kept boats secure at the shoreline.
