Slievecallan, Mountain summit in County Clare, Ireland
Slievecallan is a mountain summit in the West Clare range, rising to 391 meters with heathland and pastures covering its slopes. The peak sits within County Clare in the west of Ireland.
Two megalithic tombs rest on the southern slopes, marking ancient burial sites from prehistory. An ogham stone with an old inscription was found in the late 1700s.
The mountain holds importance in Irish mythology, as the ogham stone inscription mentions Conan, a member of the legendary Fianna warriors.
The summit is accessible from nearby villages via local roads through surrounding farmland. Weather on the slopes can change quickly, so visitors should come prepared for wind and rain.
A modern wind farm with 29 turbines has operated on the slopes since 2018, creating an unusual sight of renewable energy infrastructure among the heathland. The installations span both eastern and western sections.
