Cliffs of Moher, Natural cliffs in Liscannor, Ireland.
The Cliffs of Moher stretch for eight kilometers along the Atlantic coast and rise to a maximum height of 214 meters above the sea. The dark limestone walls run from Hag's Head in the south to north of the viewing tower and form an almost continuous vertical rock face.
The construction of O'Brien's Tower in 1835 marked the beginning of organized tourism at this site. Before that time, only fishermen and shepherds used the steep paths along the cliff edge.
Local fishermen have used the coastline as a navigational reference for generations and as part of their daily work. Visitors often encounter artists and musicians who draw inspiration from the landscape and showcase their work in nearby villages.
The visitor center is built into the hillside and offers exhibitions on regional geology and wildlife. The paths along the cliffs are partly paved but can become slippery during strong winds and rain.
The layered rock strata display 320 million years of geological development and mark the western edge of the Burren formation. On clear days, you can see the Aran Islands and the mountains of Connemara on the horizon from here.
