O'Brien's Tower

O'Brien's Tower is a 3-story stone structure perched on the Cliffs of Moher, standing prominently above the coastline. The building offers views across the Atlantic Ocean toward the Aran Islands and Galway Bay from multiple viewing levels.

Cornelius O'Brien, a local landowner, built this tower in 1835 with the goal of drawing tourists to the remote cliffs and creating work for county residents. The project emerged during a time when Ireland sought new ways to generate income in rural areas.

The tower reflects 19th-century tastes when wealthy landowners built such structures to enhance their estates and draw visitors to remote areas. It shows how people of that era viewed the landscape as something to be improved and shaped for enjoyment.

The tower is accessible through the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre and open to visitors during operating hours. Wear sturdy footwear since the pathways to and around the structure are uneven and often windier than surrounding areas.

The tower sits at the highest point of the Cliffs of Moher, where visitors can watch nesting seabirds in their natural habitats. This position makes it an excellent vantage point for observing bird behavior and flight patterns directly, especially during breeding season.
