Ballyryan

Ballyryan is a limestone climbing area in the Burren region of County Clare, featuring natural rock walls with established routes. The crag rises roughly 25 meters and faces west, offering climbing on exposed stone with a variety of difficulty levels.

Local climbers began establishing routes here in the early 1970s, developing the area as a climbing destination. Early documented ascents like Whose Corner and Whacky reflect the pioneers who first explored these limestone walls.

The name Ballyryan derives from the Irish Baile Uí Rinn, meaning Ring's homestead, reflecting the historical land ownership patterns in County Clare.

The site sits near the R477 road south of Fanore with accessible parking nearby. Weather conditions change frequently in the Burren, so climbers should be prepared for shifting wind and rain.

The routes span from beginner-friendly grades to advanced levels, with climbs like Right Crack using natural features in the limestone. Some paths take advantage of distinct cracks and formations that make each section feel quite different from the next.
