Gregans Castle, Manor house and tower complex in Burren region, Ireland
Gregans Castle is a property with a 15th-century tower and an 18th-century Georgian manor set on limestone terraces in County Clare's Burren region. The structures stand near Ballyvaughan village and today operate as a hotel with a restaurant.
The tower was built by the O'Lochlainn family, known as Princes of Burren, who lived there until 1654. After that point, the Cromwellian Settlement transferred ownership to the Martyn family.
The setting drew writers and artists over the decades who found inspiration in the raw limestone landscape. Visitors can sense this creative connection reflected in how the place is arranged and experienced today.
The property welcomes guests from February through December with rooms overlooking gardens and the coast. Access to the rugged limestone landscape is direct from the site, making walks into the surrounding countryside easy to arrange.
The site treats wastewater through a natural wetland system and uses wind power for electricity. These environmental practices are uncommon for a historic property and show a modern approach to running a heritage building.
