Shanmuckinish Castle

Shanmuckinish Castle, Medieval tower house in Drumcreehy, Ireland

Shanmuckinish Castle is a four-story stone structure with defensive loops on lower windows and larger openings on upper floors. The building features two vaulted ceilings and partial walls that let visitors see the internal layout and design.

The castle was built around 1450 and received repairs in 1836 before being abandoned around 1897. This long period of use shows how important the structure was to the local community.

The name Muckinis comes from Irish and means 'pig island', showing how the local language shaped place names across County Clare.

The building stands about 17 meters tall and can be viewed from the outside, though visitors should watch for uneven ground and missing railings. Wearing sturdy shoes is advisable given the rural location and condition of the site.

Two castles named Muckinish were built within three years of each other, with this one known as 'Shan' meaning old in Irish. The distinction between the two was a practical way for locals to tell them apart.
