Cahermore ringfort, Medieval ringfort in Rathborney, Ireland

Cahermore ringfort is a medieval fortified settlement standing in the countryside near Rathborney in County Clare. The circular structure features thick limestone walls roughly 3 meters (9 feet) in height and width, creating a defensive enclosure with defined interior spaces.

Archaeological evidence including a scallop shell found beneath the foundations points to construction and occupation dating to the early 14th century. Excavations conducted in the late 1990s revealed additional artifacts that underscore the site's importance during that medieval period.

The ringfort contains guard chambers at its entrance that signal the elevated social standing of those who lived here. These features reveal how medieval Irish families of means protected and displayed their wealth and power.

The site sits near the R480 road between Ballyvaughan and Leamaneh Castle with designated parking areas available. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and come prepared for uneven ground since the location stands in open countryside.

During excavations in the late 1990s, the entrance lintel collapsed and revealed a coin from 1690 along with other artifacts. This discovery suggests the location held importance well beyond its original medieval occupation.
