Doonagore Castle, 16th century tower house in County Clare, Ireland
The circular stone castle stands on an elevated position near Doolin Point, serving as a navigational marker for approaching boats on the Atlantic coast.
The castle witnessed a tragic event in 1588 when 170 Spanish Armada survivors were executed by order of the High Sheriff of County Clare.
The name Doonagore originates from the Irish Dún na Gabhair, reflecting the local tradition of naming places based on geographical features or animal presence.
The castle remains a private residence owned by the Gorman family since the 1970s, with exterior views available from the adjacent public road.
The structure represents one of only three cylindrical tower houses in the Burren region, built with sandstone rather than the typical limestone of the area.
