St. Mary's Abbey, Cistercian monastery and national monument in Trim, Ireland
The monastery contains a preserved Chapter House and Slype, which connects the cloister to the eastern area where the infirmary was located.
Founded in 1139, St. Mary's Abbey grew into one of Ireland's largest medieval monasteries, although only two structures remain visible in present times.
The Chapter House functioned as a gathering space where monks assembled after morning mass to read religious rules and participate in confession ceremonies.
The Chapter House remains open for guided tours, allowing visitors to explore the architectural elements and historical significance of this medieval structure.
In 1534, the Chapter House witnessed Silken Thomas declaring his rebellion against Henry VIII, marking a pivotal moment in Irish history.
