Khirbet Umm a Shaqaf, Archaeological site in southern Israel.

Khirbet Umm a Shaqaf is an archaeological site in southern Israel containing multiple rock-cut dwelling caves, burial chambers, and a Byzantine bathhouse with heating systems and water facilities. The remains show a network of rooms connected by underground channels that distributed heat and water throughout the complex.

Settlement began in the seventh century BCE and the site experienced different phases under Jewish, Roman, and Christian occupation until the eighth century CE. This long period of habitation reflects how the region was shaped by changing cultures over many centuries.

The site shows Jewish ritual baths from the first century BCE and Byzantine wine-making facilities, documenting religious practices and local food production. These discoveries reveal how different communities carried out their daily tasks and lived according to their beliefs.

The site requires prior arrangement with local authorities before visiting, as it is an active excavation area. Visitors should bring proper footwear and sun protection, since most of the site is exposed with little shade available.

The bathing system followed a linear layout with rooms of different temperatures connected by an underground heating network called a hypocaust. This technical design was unusual in this region and shows that residents possessed advanced knowledge of heat distribution.
