Bokaro Steel City, Industrial city in Bokaro district, India
Bokaro Steel City is an industrial city in Bokaro district, India, that extends along the banks of the Damodar River. The residential sectors are organized in a grid format around the central steel production facility, with wide roads connecting the different numbered sectors.
The Steel Authority of India founded this planned urban center starting in 1964, transforming a rural area into an industrial hub. The development took place gradually with Soviet technical assistance during the following two decades.
The name derives from the steel manufacturing plant that forms the core of the settlement and shapes both the cityscape and the rhythm of daily life. In the residential sectors, shops, street food stalls and tea kiosks line the roads, where people gather after work and speak in many different regional languages.
The city sits on direct rail and road links to Kolkata, and the journey from the capital of West Bengal takes several hours. The steel plant offers guided tours of the production facilities that show visitors the industrial process.
Artificial cooling ponds created for steel manufacturing draw water from both the Garga River dam and the Tenughat dam system. These large water bodies have become habitats for water birds that can be observed on the outskirts of the city.
