Tumkur is a town in the state of Karnataka in southern India, known for its many educational institutions and surrounding coconut plantations. The settlement sits about 70 kilometers northwest of Bangalore and serves as a center for several surrounding villages and neighborhoods.
The British colonial administration created a separate district here in 1862, previously part of a larger administrative territory. This reorganization changed the regional layout fundamentally and brought new administrative structures to the area.
The name of this town comes from the Kannada word for thousand hills, referring to the rolling terrain all around. Today you see many temples and school buildings throughout the streets, shaping daily routines for residents and serving as regular gathering points for young and old.
Visitors reach this place easily through the regional road network or by train from larger cities in the region. The best months for a stay fall between October and March when temperatures are milder and walking around is more comfortable.
