Jayamangali Blackbuck Reserve, Protected grassland reserve in Tumakuru district, India
Jayamangali Blackbuck Reserve is a protected area in the Tumakuru district of Karnataka, made up of open grassland with scattered Eucalyptus and Acacia trees and patches of low shrubs. The reserve is home to one of the few remaining populations of blackbuck, an antelope species that has become rare across much of India.
The land was used for farming before the Karnataka government declared it a conservation reserve in 2007. Wildlife surveys carried out before that decision showed the area held animal populations worth protecting, which gave the case for official designation a solid foundation.
The name Jayamangali comes from a nearby village, and the reserve is closely tied to the identity of the surrounding communities. Visitors can see how people living near the edge of the reserve treat the land with care, which reflects a shared sense of responsibility toward the wildlife living there.
Visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon gives the best chance of seeing animals moving across the open ground, as they tend to rest in shaded areas during the hottest part of the day. There are no facilities inside the reserve, so bring everything you need before entering.
Despite its small size, the reserve has been recorded as home to over 60 butterfly species and more than 120 bird species, a concentration that surprises many first-time visitors. This variety comes from the mix of grassland, scattered trees and shrub patches that create several different small habitats side by side.
