The William Arthur Memorial Church stands with a turquoise blue exterior on National Highway 206, connecting Bangalore to Honavar in Karnataka.
The church replaced the former Gobbee Chapel in 1904, following years of Wesleyan missionary work initiated by Thomas Hodson and John Jenkins in 1837.
The building represents early Irish Wesleyan influence in India, named after William Arthur who dedicated years to missionary activities and learned Canarese language.
Located 80 kilometers from Bangalore, the church operates under the Diocese of Central Karnataka within the Church of South India administration.
The first Christian convert in Gubbi was Daniel, previously known as Chickka, a local washerman who accepted the faith near the church gates in 1836.
