Dharmavaram, Silk production center in Anantapur district, India

Dharmavaram is a silk production center in Anantapur district, situated at 345 meters elevation in Andhra Pradesh. The town developed around handloom weaving, specializing in silk sarees adorned with intricate Jacquard patterns created by local artisans.

The town takes its name from Dharmamba, mother of Kriyasakthi Odeyar, who built the Dharmavaram water tank in earlier times. This structure marked an important moment in the settlement's development, which later transformed into a recognized center for silk craftsmanship.

Silk weaving forms the backbone of daily life here, with artisans working looms that have been part of the community for generations. Visitors can observe weavers practicing their craft and understand how textiles shape the town's character and identity.

The town is accessible via Dharmavaram Junction railway station, connected to major cities through the Guntakal-Bangalore railway line. National Highway NH42 also provides road access for visitors traveling by car or bus.

Local weavers employ specialized techniques to extract silk directly from silkworm cocoons, allowing them to produce raw silk on-site. This process sets the local production apart from many other centers where raw silk is imported.
