Chirakkadavu Sree Mahadeva Temple, Hindu temple in Kanjirappally taluk, Kerala, India.
Chirakkadavu Sree Mahadeva Temple is a Hindu temple in Kanjirappally taluk, Kerala, built in the traditional architectural style of the region. At the entrance stands a large granite oil lamp pillar, and the wooden structures carry carved motifs typical of Kerala temple craftsmanship.
The temple is said to have been founded over 1000 years ago during the period of the Alwars, a group of saints venerated across South India. Inside, it houses a Swayambhu Siva Lingam, a sacred stone believed to have formed naturally and which, according to tradition, was once hidden beneath a tree.
The temple is an active place of daily prayer where worshippers gather at set hours to perform rituals known as puja. Visitors can observe these ceremonies and take a closer look at the wooden carvings on the temple walls.
The temple is calmest and most welcoming in the early morning and late afternoon, making those the best times to visit. Visitors should cover their shoulders and legs and remove shoes before entering the grounds.
During temple festivals, children perform a dance form called Velakali dressed in warrior costumes and accompanied by drums. This performance draws on old combat training traditions that have since become part of ceremonial worship.
