Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction is a railway station in east central India and sits on the main line between Delhi and Kolkata. Eight platform tracks run through the sprawling site, which processes hundreds of trains daily for passengers and freight.
The station opened in 1862 as part of the East Indian Railway Company's network and linked northern and eastern India during colonial times. It remained a key junction through all later reorganizations of Indian Railways.
This railway hub received its present name in 2018 to honor Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, a political thinker. The earlier name Mughalsarai referred to the region's historical roots.
Several waiting rooms, ticket counters and basic stalls are spread across the platforms, and signs in multiple languages help with orientation. Arrivals and departures change frequently, so check the live displays and ask staff when needed.
The site includes Asia's largest marshaling yard, which stretches for more than 12 kilometers and sorts around 1500 freight wagons daily. This vast area mostly stays out of sight for travelers, but it shapes logistics across eastern India.
