Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple is a Hindu temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. The grounds cover several acres with the main shrine at the center and forested areas in the outer sections.
The temple was built at the start of the 20th century by Madan Mohan Malviya, who later founded Banaras Hindu University. It rose near two other important temples in the Varanasi region.
The The name means "liberator from troubles" and visitors see devotees offering sweets and flowers to Hanuman while reciting prayers in the open courtyard. Local families come regularly on Tuesday mornings when the air fills with the sound of bells and chanting from groups gathered around the shrine.
The complex opens early in the morning and closes late in the evening with a midday break. Tuesday and Saturday draw especially large crowds for special ceremonies.
The clay figure of the deity in the main shrine looks directly toward the statue of Ram, an arrangement representing eternal devotion between the two deities. In spring the temple hosts a multiday music festival with classical performances and devotional songs.
