New Vishwanath Temple, Hindu temple in Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India
The New Vishwanath Temple is a Hindu temple on the Banaras Hindu University campus in Varanasi. The white structure displays stone walls carved with figures and patterns, while a tall spire rises above the roof and surrounds the domes of the inner halls.
The foundation stone was laid in 1931 when the educator Madan Mohan Malaviya developed plans for a spiritual center within the new university. The construction continued over three decades and was completed in the mid-1960s after several phases shaped the layout and the exterior.
The temple complex serves both as a religious center and an educational institution, where students participate in ceremonies while pursuing academic studies.
Visitors must remove shoes before entering the prayer halls and wear modest clothing. The compound is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and the site expects quiet behavior in the sacred areas.
Inside the central chamber, a dark statue stands beneath the main tower, surrounded by smaller altars showing other deities. The site sits within the university grounds and combines religious practice with academic life in the adjacent buildings.
