National War Memorial, War memorial in Central Vista, New Delhi, India
The National War Memorial is a war memorial in the Central Vista neighborhood of New Delhi, India, arranged as four concentric circles around a continuously burning flame. Granite panels on the outer walls carry engraved names, and trees line the paved paths between each ring.
The memorial opened in February 2019 to honor soldiers who fell in different conflicts since 1947. Planning began decades earlier and passed through several governments before a final design was adopted.
The central obelisk rises 15 meters (49 feet) and is surrounded by water bodies that reflect the trees around them. Visitors walk slowly along the granite panels and often pause at certain names, while others gather quietly near the flame.
Access is step-free, and the pathways are wide enough for wheelchairs and strollers. The site opens at sunrise and closes at sunset, and admission is free.
Digital kiosks near the entrance help families locate specific names on the panels. The layout follows a chronological division by conflict, so each section corresponds to a particular period.
