National Gallery of Modern Art, National art museum in New Delhi, India.
The National Gallery of Modern Art is an art museum in New Delhi housed in a former royal residence that holds more than sixteen thousand works. The rooms spread across two floors and an outdoor area with sculptures under trees.
The Indian government founded the museum in 1954 and chose a building from the 1930s that had originally been designed for an Indian maharaja. After independence, the house was transformed into a public institution.
The museum displays paintings and sculptures by local artists whose works combine modern subjects with traditional painting techniques from South Asia. Many visitors come specifically to see collections from Bengali and Rajasthani schools that reach back to the early 19th century.
The museum opens daily except Mondays from 10 to 17 and is wheelchair accessible. Visitors should allow time for both floors and the garden, as the exhibition spaces are extensive.
Inside, documentation and research centers collect archive material and rare catalogs on modern art from India. These areas are available to scholars and interested visitors upon request.
