Amar Jawan Jyoti, War memorial at National War Memorial, India
Amar Jawan Jyoti is a war memorial at the National War Memorial in India, featuring a reversed rifle topped with a steel helmet and four urns. The structure stands in an open plaza, surrounded by landscaped grounds and ceremonial pathways leading to the central memorial zone.
The memorial was inaugurated in 1972 following the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 and served as the country's central military remembrance site until 2022. The flame was then merged with that of the National War Memorial to consolidate all war memorials under one symbol.
The name translates to 'immortal soldier's eternal light,' and the site remains a gathering point for veterans and families on Republic Day and Army Day. Citizens leave flowers and pay respects throughout the year, keeping the tradition of remembrance alive across generations.
The site is accessible daily, and visitors can observe guard changes that take place at regular intervals. On public holidays and memorial days, wreath-laying ceremonies occur, attended by officials and citizens.
The flame burned continuously for 50 years at its original location near India Gate before being relocated in January 2022. The merging of the two fires was meant to unify remembrance of all fallen soldiers since independence under a single memorial.
