Jethabhai's Stepwell, Stepwell monument in Isanpur, Ahmedabad, India.
Jethabhai's Stepwell is a water monument in Isanpur that stretches across a significant length with a large domed pavilion at the western entrance supported by multiple pillars. The structure comprises four pavilions connected by descending galleries that lead into the depths of the well.
This stepwell was built during the 1860s using materials salvaged from dismantled mosques in the area. The reuse of architectural components from earlier structures reflects the building practices of that era.
The stepwell displays Hindu architectural features alongside repurposed Islamic decorative elements from earlier structures. Visitors can observe how these different design traditions come together in the carved details and wall ornaments.
Access to the monument is through the western entrance pavilion, which serves as the main gateway to explore the interior. From there, you can move through the connecting galleries and descend the staircases to view the different pavilions.
The Archaeological Survey of India carried out extensive restoration work between 2017 and 2018 to preserve the structure. These conservation efforts have ensured that this water heritage site remains stable and protected for visitors.
