Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary, Nature reserve in Udupi district, India
Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected forest area within the Western Ghats, containing evergreen and semi-evergreen woods along with deciduous sections. The reserve includes several connected forest zones that provide habitat for various wildlife species.
The reserve was established by the Karnataka government in 1974 as a protected forest area. Additional forest zones were incorporated in 1978, expanding the sanctuary's boundaries to encompass more connected woodland.
The name comes from Goddess Mookambika, whose temple sits within the protected area near Kollur and draws both pilgrims and nature visitors. The shrine reflects how local spiritual traditions remain woven into the landscape and its daily rhythm.
The best time to visit is between September and April when weather conditions are most favorable. Kundapur town serves as the main gateway, providing accommodation and supplies before heading into the forest area.
Two rivers flow through the forest, supporting rare species like the Indian soft-shell turtle that many visitors do not notice. These waterways also sustain hundreds of butterfly species that add unexpected color to the woodland habitat.
