Ackerl Hut, Mountain shelter in Going am Wilden Kaiser, Austria
The Ackerl Hut is a mountain shelter at 1,455 meters positioned below the south faces of Ackerlspitze and Maukspitze peaks in the Wilden Kaiser range. It provides 15 mattress spaces for climbers tackling these challenging rock faces.
The shelter was established by the Kitzbühel section of the Austrian Alpine Club to support climbers accessing the challenging south rock faces nearby. This initiative was part of early development efforts to open the Wilden Kaiser region for alpine climbing.
The hut represents traditional Alpine culture and shows how climbers stay self-sufficient while exploring and connecting with others in the Tyrolean mountains.
Access requires obtaining a key from the Kitzbühel section of the Alpine Club beforehand. Plan to arrive during suitable weather and bring proper mountain gear, as the location sits in the high Alpine zone.
The shelter earned environmental certification in 1998, making it an early adopter of sustainable mountain accommodation in the Austrian Alps. This recognition shows how Alpine refuges blend environmental responsibility with traditional practices.
