Kölnbrein Dam, Arch dam in Malta Valley, Austria
The Kölnbrein Dam rises 200 meters above the reservoir, featuring curved concrete walls that span 626 meters across the Malta Valley at 1,902 meters elevation.
Construction of the Kölnbrein Dam began in the early 1970s and concluded in 1977, marking a milestone in Austrian hydroelectric infrastructure development.
The Malta High Alpine Road leads visitors through natural stone tunnels and hairpin turns to reach the dam, which represents Austrian engineering capabilities.
From May to October, guided tours of the dam structure operate hourly between 9:00 and 16:00, starting at the shop in the Malta Mountain Hotel.
The Verbund Airwalk platform extends from the dam wall, allowing visitors to stand 200 meters above the water surface of the Kölnbrein reservoir.
