Hintertux Glacier, Year-round ski resort in Tux, Austria
Hintertux Glacier stretches from about 1,500 to 3,250 meters (4,921 to 10,663 feet) in altitude, offering more than 60 kilometers (37 miles) of slopes for skiing and snowboarding across roughly 600 hectares (1,483 acres) of terrain. Numerous lift systems connect the different elevation levels and allow skiers to explore varied difficulty grades.
The Hintertux area transformed from a remote glacier region into an established winter sports destination starting in the early 1900s. This shift was driven by the construction of modern infrastructure and the expansion of skiing facilities.
The mountain huts across the glacier serve traditional Tyrolean dishes that reflect local Alpine food customs of the Zillertal valley. Visitors can experience regional specialties and taste how people here have eaten for generations.
The lifts typically operate from early morning until late afternoon, allowing a full day on the slopes. The resort is accessible by car or bus, with several connections from nearby larger towns and cities.
Beneath the glacier lies the Spannagel Cave system with natural ice formations, considered one of the largest cave networks in the Central Alps. This underground network can be explored on guided tours and reveals a hidden world beneath the slopes.
