Klafferkessel

The Klafferkessel nature reserve encompasses two glacial cirques with approximately 30 mountain lakes at an elevation of 2,300 meters in the Schladminger Tauern range.

The area received official protection status on December 1, 1980, establishing 1,130 hectares of preserved alpine terrain for future generations.

The Central Alpine Way traverses through Klafferkessel, connecting mountain huts Gollinghütte and Preintalerhütte while offering opportunities to experience Alpine natural heritage.

Visitors can access the reserve from the Seeleiten parking lot in Untertal, with the complete hiking circuit requiring approximately nine hours to navigate the 21-kilometer trail.

The network of lakes includes Untere Klaffersee, Rauhenbergsee, and Obere Klaffersee, surrounded by peaks such as Greifenstein at 2,397 meters and Waldhorn at 2,702 meters.
