Glocknerbivak, Bivouac shelter near Grossglockner, Austria.
Glocknerbivak is a bivouac shelter on the southern slope of Grossglockner at approximately 3,205 meters elevation, serving as emergency accommodation for climbers. It features an aluminum frame with a protective shell designed to endure harsh mountain weather and heavy snow loads.
The original structure was built in 1957 and provided shelter to mountaineers for many decades at this extreme elevation. A new facility was constructed in 2023 to improve conditions and address ongoing maintenance demands.
The shelter represents the Austrian Alpine Club's commitment to maintaining mountain infrastructure while preserving climbing traditions in the Eastern Alps.
The shelter accommodates around 15 people and has designated areas for cooking and basic survival needs. Keep in mind this is a minimal emergency facility, not a comfortable mountain lodge with amenities.
Assembly required twelve workers who transported prefabricated sections by helicopter to the remote site. The entire structure can be completely dismantled and removed without leaving any environmental impact.
