Founded in 1961 as the Museum of Literature, the institution expanded its scope in 1977 to include theatrical arts within its preservation mission.
The museum maintains 67 literary collections and 17 theater collections, featuring works from notable authors such as Ivo Andrić and Peter Kočić.
Located in a mid-19th century building, the museum operates Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM with entry fees of 5 KM for adults.
The ground floor houses the Mak Gallery exhibition space, which has presented artistic displays since its establishment in 1992.
