Ferhadija Mosque, Ottoman mosque in Stari Grad, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Ferhadija Mosque is located where Ferhadija and Vladislava Skarić streets meet in the old town. The building has one large dome above the main prayer area and three smaller domes positioned around the courtyard.
This building was constructed between 1561 and 1562 under the direction of Sanjak Bey Ferhad Bey Vuković-Desisalić. The original complex included not only the prayer house but also a school, public kitchen, and water facilities.
The interior walls display paint layers applied over centuries, with the oldest patterns from the 1500s showing traditional Islamic designs. These overlapping decorations tell the story of how people have understood and expressed their faith through art across different eras.
The mosque opens daily for prayers and visiting, with separate spaces for men and women according to Islamic custom. Visitors should remove their shoes before entering the prayer area and be respectful during prayer times.
During restoration work, builders found architectural features from the 1500s and 1600s that had been covered up during the Austro-Hungarian occupation. These discoveries reveal how different craftspeople left their mark on the structure over time.
