Halud Vihara, Buddhist monastery in Rajshahi, Bangladesh
Halud Vihara is an archaeological mound near Rajshahi containing stone sculptures, terracotta figures, and metal objects from ancient Buddhist settlements. Excavations have revealed multiple construction layers that show how the site developed across different periods.
The site developed as a Buddhist monastery during the Pala period and was continuously expanded over several centuries. It was added to the UNESCO Tentative List in 1999 as a proposed extension to the Buddhist monastery ruins at Paharpur.
The remains of this Buddhist monastery demonstrate the development and propagation of Buddhist practices through architectural and artistic expressions in Bengal.
Visits must be arranged in advance, and travel to the site is by local transport from Rajshahi. The best time to visit is between October and March when the weather is dry and comfortable.
