Sura Mosque, Ancient mosque in Ghoraghat, Bangladesh
The Sura Mosque is a modest prayer hall with a square floor plan and black stone minarets at its corners. The structure features three domed arcades supporting the entrance veranda, creating a simple and functional design.
This place was built during the early 16th century under the reign of Sultan Husain Shah. The construction methods and architectural style belong to that period of sultanate rule.
The walls display intricate terracotta decorations with traditional chain and bell patterns that reflect local craftsmanship from Bengal. These ornamental details show how regional artisans expressed their style through architectural elements.
The mosque sits about 10 kilometers west of Ghoraghat on the main road between Hili and Ghoraghat. You can enter through three gates positioned along the east wall, making access straightforward.
The building incorporates black granite and precious stones from Rajmahal hill in its construction. The mihrab niches feature detailed carvings that showcase the craftsmanship invested in these sacred spaces.
