Boekenbergpark, Public park in Deurne Antwerp, Belgium
Boekenbergpark is a 10-hectare green space in Deurne featuring walking paths, gardens, and two swimming pools of varying depths for different swimmers. The layout combines recreational pathways with distinct garden zones and water facilities throughout the grounds.
The park developed around 1800 as a green space surrounding a rococo villa and preserves a ruin tower with underground ice cellars from that era. These original structures reflect how the grounds once functioned as an aristocratic estate.
The Natuurhistorisch Museum Boekenberg occupies underground corridors within the park and displays collections related to paleontology, archaeology, and mineralogy. The exhibits give visitors insight into the natural history of the region through discoveries and specimens.
The ecological swimming pond is open seasonally from mid-May to mid-September and relies on natural water purification using specialized filters and aquatic plants. Visitors should plan visits during these months and expect the water environment to be maintained through biological filtration methods.
During winter months the swimming pond becomes a training ground for the Deurnese IJsberen, a winter swimming group that practices in cold water. This dedicated community gives the location a distinctive winter identity that few visitors experience.
