Fort 2, Military fort in Wommelgem, Belgium.
Fort 2 is a fortified structure in Wommelgem featuring a central reduit, caponiers, artillery platforms, and wide moats that surround the installation. The entire complex spans approximately 30 hectares and demonstrates 19th-century military construction methods.
The fort was built between 1860 and 1864 as part of Belgium's National Redoubt and formed one of eight installations creating a defensive ring around Antwerp. It later served military purposes during both World Wars and received concrete gun turrets for updated defense capabilities.
The fort contains a museum with objects and information about both World Wars, including German military murals depicting desert scenes on its walls. Visitors can still see these artworks today and get a sense of how soldiers used the space.
Visitors can explore the museum through scheduled guided tours that help navigate the site. Parts of the fort are used for local events and gatherings, so it is helpful to check access and available areas before your visit.
Two concrete gun turrets were added between 1909 and 1911, demonstrating how the fort adapted to more advanced weaponry of the time. These structures represent the military modernization efforts of the early 20th century.
