Fort 1, Military fortification in Wijnegem, Belgium
Fort 1 is a former military fortification in Wijnegem, Belgium, constructed as part of a defensive network protecting Antwerp with brick and stone construction. The site sits along the Turnhoutsebaan road and was positioned to guard the city from potential threats.
The fort was built between 1860 and 1864 under engineer Henri Alexis Brialmont and served as a strategic defense point for Antwerp. It was part of a comprehensive fortification system designed to protect the city from invasion.
The site shifted from military defense to commerce and nature over time, creating two distinct spaces in one location. The shopping center in the south contrasts sharply with the forested area that now covers the north.
The site is now accessible mainly through the Wijnegem Shopping Center in the south and a wooded area in the north, each offering different ways to experience the location. Walking around the shopping center provides easier access if you want to explore what remains of the fortification's footprint.
Unlike other fortifications from the same era, this fort was completely demolished in 1959 and left no visible structure behind. It remains the only fort from the Brialmont series to vanish entirely from the landscape.
