Heron Road Bridge, Memorial bridge in Ottawa, Canada
The Heron Road Bridge spans both the Rideau River and Rideau Canal, connecting Baseline Road to Heron Road near Carleton University in Ottawa.
During construction in 1966, the bridge suffered a catastrophic collapse that resulted in nine worker fatalities and more than sixty injuries.
The bridge stands as a memorial to workplace safety, with a commemorative plaque and monument at Vincent Massey Park honoring construction workers.
The structure underwent a complete rehabilitation between 2011 and 2012, with improvements costing 15 million dollars to ensure continued safety.
The bridge collapse registered on local seismometers and remains the most severe construction accident in Ottawa and Ontario's history.
