Hog's Back Bridge, Swing and road bridges at Rideau Canal in Ottawa, Canada
Hog's Back Bridge is a two-part bridge system spanning the Rideau Canal and connecting Hog's Back Road with Mooney's Bay in Ottawa. It includes both a standard roadway structure and a separate movable section designed for water traffic.
The bridge was constructed in 1976 as part of Ottawa's transportation infrastructure development. It was designed from the start to accommodate both vehicle traffic and boat navigation along the canal.
The bridge serves as a connection point where locals and visitors cross between different parts of the city on foot or by vehicle. It supports both everyday commuting and recreational use of the canal's waterfront areas.
The movable section operates during warmer months from May to October and is raised for boats passing through. Vehicle traffic may experience brief delays when the bridge lifts to allow water traffic to pass.
The bridge system can allow boats reaching approximately 9 feet in height to pass when the movable section is raised. This is accomplished through a circular rail mechanism that rotates the bridge upward and to the side.
