Sir Charles Tupper Building, Government building at Riverside Drive, Canada

The Sir Charles Tupper Building is a government structure in Ottawa with five interlocking rectangular blocks stacked in a stair-step pattern, rising four to five stories high. The stepped design creates large window openings that bring natural light into the interior spaces.

The structure was built between 1955 and 1960 as the headquarters for Canada's Department of Public Works during the nation's post-war government expansion. Its construction reflects the growing administrative needs of the Canadian government in the years following World War II.

The building displays International Style design with flat roofs and a glass-and-metal curtain wall that defines its modern character. Colored exterior panels contribute to its distinctive contemporary appearance from different angles.

The building sits at 2720 Riverside Drive and is most easily reached by public transit or car. The main entrance features a revolving door that makes access straightforward and clearly visible from outside.

The main entrance features granite columns and a plate glass wall that opens into a split-level hall with polished stone floors. This interior design creates a notably open feeling when entering the building.
