True North Square, Mixed-use development in Downtown Winnipeg, Canada
True North Square is a mixed-use development in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba, made up of three towers arranged around an open plaza. The towers hold offices, residential apartments, and ground-floor retail, bringing together work, housing, and shopping in a single city block.
The project broke ground in 2016 as part of a push to bring new investment into downtown Winnipeg, an area that had seen little development for decades. Once the complex was finished, it drew further construction activity to the surrounding streets.
On nights when the Winnipeg Jets play at the Canada Life Centre next door, the outdoor plaza fills with fans before and after the game. On quieter days, office workers and residents from the apartments above use the open space as a place to eat lunch or take a break.
True North Square connects to the rest of downtown through an enclosed elevated walkway system, which makes moving around much easier during Winnipeg's cold winters. Visitors who arrive by car will find underground parking directly beneath the complex.
Although the design was built in Canada, it draws from Catalan modernism, a style most associated with Barcelona. The repeating curved arc that appears across the towers, stairways, and benches is a direct reference to that European tradition.
