St. John's Building, Commercial skyscraper in Central, Hong Kong
St. John's Building is a 22-floor office tower on Garden Road in the Central district of Hong Kong. It stands close to St. John's Cathedral, from which it takes its name, and sits at the foot of the slope leading up to Victoria Peak.
A residential complex that once stood on this site was demolished in the early 1960s to make way for a new development. The current tower was completed in 1983, reflecting the broader transformation of Central into a dense commercial zone.
The building sits right next to the lower terminal of the Peak Tram, so a constant flow of visitors and commuters passes through the area every day. This proximity means the ground floor surroundings feel more like a transit point than a typical office entrance.
The building is accessible on weekdays during regular office hours, and the entrance on Garden Road is easy to spot from street level. As it is a working office building, access to the upper floors is generally limited to people with a scheduled appointment.
The building received an award from the Hong Kong Institute of Architects shortly after it opened, making it one of the few 1980s office towers in the city to earn formal architectural recognition. The award acknowledged a clean and functional design approach that stood apart from the more ornate styles common at the time.
