The Helena May main building

The Helena May main building is a declared monument and private club located at Garden Road featuring Edwardian Classical Revival architecture. The three-story structure showcases open verandahs and Neo-classical columns that define its appearance.

The building was constructed in 1916 as a residence for women and later served military purposes during World War II as Japanese quarters. Following the war, it became Royal Air Force headquarters until it transitioned to its current purpose.

The building began as a refuge for foreign women living in Hong Kong, offering spaces where they could gather and build friendships away from home. Today the elegant rooms still reflect this legacy of community and belonging within the city.

The building is situated at Garden Road in Central and Western District and operates as a private club with limited public access. Visitors interested in viewing the interior should check conditions in advance, as membership restrictions apply.

The entrance porch displays a segmental arched pediment decorated with floral details resting on columns with tasseled capitals. These ornamental touches show careful craftsmanship that sets apart this colonial-era structure from other buildings of its time.
