Wan Chai Market occupies the ground floor of the Shing Cheong Pass building at 258 Queen's Road East, with a pale stone or concrete frame around a central bay of green-tinted glass divided into three stacked sections. Above the recessed glass doors a sign reads "灣仔街市 WANCHAI MARKET". The floor holds 50 stalls under central air conditioning, with fruit and vegetable stalls near Stone Nullah Lane and meat, fish and vegetable stalls by the Wan Chai Road entrance.

The Urban Renewal Authority project replaced the old Wan Chai Market and the temporary market on this site. The government resumed the land in December 1999, demolition of the temporary market began in April 2000, and piling started in July 2002. The new market was completed in mid-2007 but opened on 1 September 2008 after vendors refused to move in.

The market opened on 1 September 2008 under the name Wan Chai Market, taking in the tenants of the old market. It was the first market in Hong Kong designed without poultry stalls, a choice made to lower the risk of spreading avian influenza. Its 50 stalls sit in an air-conditioned hall, with fruit and vegetable stalls mainly toward Stone Nullah Lane and meat, fish and vegetable stalls near the Wan Chai Road entrance.

The market occupies only the ground floor of the Zenith base at 258 Queen's Road East, with entrances on Wan Chai Road, Jokea Street, Queen's Road East and Tai Yuen Street; the Tai Yuen Street door is for freight. Fruit and vegetable stalls cluster near Stone Nullah Lane, while meat, fish and vegetable stalls sit by the Wan Chai Road entrance. The whole floor is air-conditioned.

The market was the first in Hong Kong designed without poultry stalls, a decision taken during planning to reduce the risk of spreading avian influenza. Its 50 stalls sit under central air conditioning, and the basement and first floor became a Wan Chai Activities Centre and Food and Environmental Hygiene Department offices.
